What a Free Website Audit Actually Checks (And What Most Tools Miss)

PageSpeed Insights won't tell you if your CTA is in the wrong place. Our audit covers all four signals — design, conversion, technical, and competitive gap.

TL;DR: Free tools like PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix are great for speed. They tell you almost nothing about whether your website actually converts visitors into leads. A real website audit checks four signals — and most business owners have only ever seen one of them.

Not All "Free Audits" Are the Same

Google "free website audit" right now and you'll get a wall of options — most of them automated, most of them narrowly focused, and almost none of them built for a service business owner who just wants to know one thing: "Is my website working?"

The problem is that "working" means different things to different tools. A speed test says your site is fine if it loads in 2 seconds. A SEO tool cares about meta tags and backlinks. An accessibility checker looks at contrast ratios. None of them answer the question that actually matters: is this website generating leads?

Tool-by-Tool Breakdown

Google PageSpeed Insights

What it checks: Page load speed on mobile and desktop. Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS). Opportunities to optimize images, JavaScript, and server response time.

What it misses: Everything not related to speed. It won't tell you if your contact form is buried three scrolls down, if your phone number is invisible on mobile, or if your Google Business Profile contradicts your website address. PageSpeed is one signal out of many — but it's treated like the only signal.

GTmetrix

What it checks: Similar to PageSpeed with more granular waterfall charts, page size breakdowns, and historical tracking.

What it misses: Same blind spot. GTmetrix measures performance, not conversion. A site can score an A in GTmetrix and still have zero leads because there's no call-to-action above the fold.

WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool)

What it checks: Accessibility issues — missing alt text, low contrast, missing form labels, heading structure.

What it misses: WAVE doesn't touch design quality, conversion flow, lead capture, or competitive positioning. An accessible site that can't be found or doesn't convert is still a failed website.

SEO Review Tools / Sitechecker

What they check: Meta titles, meta descriptions, header tags, image alt text, broken links, sitemap presence.

What they miss: On-page SEO basics are table stakes. These tools don't evaluate whether your services are clearly listed, whether your service areas are visible, or whether your site builds trust within 5 seconds of landing.

What a Full Website Audit Covers

A conversion-ready audit evaluates four signal categories:

1. Design Score

  • Visual hierarchy: Is the most important thing the most visible thing?
  • Mobile layout: Does the site work on a phone?
  • Brand consistency: Does the site look professional?
  • Readability: Can a visitor scan and understand the offer in under 10 seconds?

2. Conversion Score

  • CTA placement: Is there a clear next step above the fold?
  • Form location: Is there a lead capture form on the homepage?
  • Phone visibility: Can a mobile visitor tap to call without hunting?
  • Friction points: How many clicks to request a quote?

3. Technical Score

  • Page speed (Core Web Vitals included)
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ)
  • SSL, crawlability, redirects

4. Lead Capture Score

  • Do forms actually submit?
  • Is form data going somewhere useful?
  • Are there multiple entry points for different visitor intent?
  • Is the contact method obvious on every page?

Why This Gap Matters

When a business owner runs a PageSpeed test and sees a green 90, they think their website is fine. They stop looking for problems. And while they're not looking, their competitors — who do have above-fold CTAs, homepage forms, and clear service pages — are capturing the leads that should have been theirs.

Speed is table stakes. It's one checkbox on a much longer list. A site with perfect Core Web Vitals still loses leads if a visitor lands and can't figure out how to get a quote in under 5 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Free tools are useful for what they do. PageSpeed Insights will tell you if your images are too heavy. GTmetrix will show you your server response time. But none of them will tell you:

  • Why visitors are leaving your site without contacting you
  • Whether your competitor's site is capturing leads you're leaving on the table
  • What single change would get you the most improvement fastest
